28 July – Attempting to shop

Stopping in China is over whelming! The choices are so numerous that I am put off before I even get started. Each department store is a giant mass of choices.

Then there are numerous department stores to chose from which makes things even worse. This is a country that is totally obsessed with shopping.

In Chengdu, for instance with already enough options for shopping there appear to be at least least four more shopping centres being built around the main square.

We are big fans of the department store food court. Most of the department stores have food courts either in the basement or on the top floor.

We are eating in one right now. It probably has 10 – 12 different food shops and 3 or 4 drinks or dessert shops. Because of my still funny tummy I am trying to eat plain food which is driving me a bit crazy. Especially as we’re in the Chengdu, in the Sichuan province famous for really good, really spicy food.

Today I have eaten plain crackers, and for tea, egg fried rice. Which actually was delicious. And for 18 Yuan was massive, I ate about half.

Linz has glass noodles with prawns and steamed sweet corn and purple yam. She also has a new drink. Lemon and raspberry ice slush with jelly and popping crystals. It’s her favourite drink so far.

LINZ’S TOP TIP of the day is, if some one asks you if you want chilli, and you don’t like spicy food, say no.Β  Do not say “a little”. In Chengdu that does not mean the same thing as in any other town…..

But I think Linz will be a changed person when were get back … she’ll be eating something other than kormas. πŸ™‚
